South Texas find Empty South Texas find

Wed Dec 15, 2021 2:06 am
I'm John A. from South Texas. I'm by no means an expert but I believe what I have found to be  a horse's head facing left that creates the sound of a horse galloping or running. Above and to the right of the head, there is an indention where I believe a finger was placed to push down and make it rock to create the sound. On the bottom there appears to be 4 points of contact.  Each one rounded smooth from excessive movement. The stone also appears to have other animal figures. I believe one to be a large cat maybe with a small pig in its mouth. There appears to be a rhino figure and also a bird figure.

Hi John, the stone does look to have logical flake removal, and touches of possible ochre. Figuration is very weak, but a pretty good face  profile faces downwards in the third picture right in the second pic, gorilla/ape , its a fairly common profile to find in genuine pieces. What you suspect as a horse looks more like a type of rhino, paraceratherium, or such like, although it does have possible mane like features, an essential trigger in horse depictions(horses seem to have a right facing bias). The first picture looks a bit like a shape on my chart, a possible communication device, gorilla, bear, human figure  featureless combo device. As for it being a lithophone, or such like at least you have put thought into how  wear could help identify such objects, I've not tried to identify any myself, but I've noticed a huge amount of skill, forethought and intelligence goes into making some finds, that apparently have extreme antiquity, and could be for little more than amusement, so I would not be surprised.

I've just noticed an important trigger for the T-Rex depiction, although not very T-Rex like immediately or obviously, I've often noticed how horse is combined, the ear becoming the eye of the T-rex. A set of Jagged almost equilateral triangles can be seen across the middle of the stone in the last picture, this is one of the triggers for the T-Rex, a set of pointy teeth, both top and bottom jaw combined.

The horse galloping rocks are a known thing, I have a few that work the same way. Someone once explained too me that it misses one contact point on the return which is what give it the galloping rhythm? Ive always thought it was a trance/ meditation type thing, if you had a bunch going of them going at once it would really be trippy.
