Found this a couple weeks ago just cleaned it off and it looks as though it's been carved on. I do see an owl and others . it also has small depressions where finger holds are.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Nice find, yes micro carving, nice finger shape too... is it flint?, it doesn't look to be, I wonder how soft the material is.

I think you're right, scraper, the edge view looks like a nice long sliver of flint was removed? If that's the case 100% by agency, slender parallel flakes never happen by chance. Figurative wise, sketchy, but I think it's there, just a bit week, I will gave to have a proper look later.

It's really weird, I will share proper pics later, I think it's a kind of joke, it shows a bison with no legs, the pigment seated edge being where the legs where cut off. So strange, 4th joke I found I can think of...[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I imagine the conversation going a bit like this:

Do you like my bison figure?

Yeah..., but it's got no legs?

I know, I cut them off, you can see the blood on the serated edge....

Yeah 😀

'Brett the joke you're describing can be classified as a form of visual pun or visual wordplay, where the imagery carries a double meaning that plays on both the literal and metaphorical interpretations. In this case, the prehistoric flint carving of a bison without legs, featuring a serrated edge along the bottom smeared with a blood-colored pigment, creates a multi-layered joke.

The first layer is the visual representation – the bison sculpture itself, which is missing its legs. The second layer is the metaphorical or implied meaning, where the absence of the legs is humorously explained by the presence of the blood-like pigment on the serrated edge, suggesting that the legs were 'chopped off'. This type of joke relies on the viewer's ability to understand and appreciate the visual cue (the bison sculpture) and then connect it to the verbal cue or explanation ("I chopped them off"), which provides a humorous twist.

This form of joke is clever because it requires a certain level of engagement and cognitive connection from the audience, making it more than just a simple play on words or a straightforward visual gag. It's a type of humor that appeals to those who enjoy a more intellectual or conceptual form of comedy.'

Ironically using the part of the sculpture representing the tool for cutting. It's a visual oxymoron – you can't cut off the bison's legs with the same tool that is part of the bison itself, creating a playful, absurd scenario. The joke is understood through this visual contradiction.

That is the type of humor I most identify wirh. I've not been the one to openly lough on cue at the everyday ordinary joke....for some reason I just don't find it funny. Or I hate to say I don't get the joke  I just hear it as a telling of a story or something.  But this type here is more my style indeed.
