I see Rock People and Pareidolia
Fri Sep 25, 2020 7:27 pm
Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon, wherein the mind perceives a familiar pattern of something where none actually exists. Mainstream archaeologists have generally explained away portable rock art as being naturally formed by nature and the images are a result of pareidolia. This recently updated article covers pareidolia and portable rock art. https://www.rockartmuseum.com/i-see-rock-people/

Spot on Anil, I will write something more applicable to pareidolia at some point, the word is nonsensical and has no intelligent usage in language apart from those who hallucinate, and even then whos to say what you can see or cannot? Nobody!

I agree that the term pareidolia is overused and abused in relation to portable rock art. However it's the most common term used by the Nay Sayers to dismiss the validity of portable rock art, necessitating the need to address it. I found the portable rock art shown below in NB Canada. It's 3 inches high with many faces. So many in fact that they could hardly be considered a result of pareidolia, but instead created by a skilled prehistoric artisan.
The question: How could prehistoric man carve such amazing portable rock art? Should be: Why have we lost that ability today? Prehistoric man lived in a completely different world than we now live in. Superior eyesight was necessary for survival in a world of mega sized animals, which are either extinct or 2 to 10 times physically smaller today. Megafauna was feared and respected as shown in their artwork. Animal and human hybrids depicted in rock art was quite common.
Today's world of junk food and computer screen eyestrain, has resulted in poor eyesight. In our electronic 2D world, most of us have lost the 3D spatial cognitive abilities necessary to create this type artwork, without the aide of a computer.
Trying to decipher effigies, with today's biases and the lack of fully understanding prehistoric environments, is a difficult and sometimes futile effort. I tend not to try to define what effigies are represented in portable rock art, unless they are very obvious.

I love looking at pictures of people's finds from all round the world. It's amazing how similar to my own finds considering the distance from me in England.
