Western Kentucky Bird Effigies Empty Western Kentucky Bird Effigies

Tue Nov 02, 2021 10:57 pm
I have recently started collecting effigies and bird are what I find most often.  I find several different styles, so these are just a few examples.  Most of the time, when I find a particular style, there are several of them at that location.  I also have a lot of owls and a few that I believe to be bats, which I will post in a different thread.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

They do look like the simpler forms of figure stones, two potential gorilla heads amongst them, and thumb iconography. Mostly too simple to be 100% convincing artifacts to me, but still a nice share thanks.

I do see the viper shape that rocky has demonstrated, I'm not 100% convinced by this, although it is definitely something, show me any genuine figure topology that does not have a dual iconic purpose. Yours also appears to have a more modern break.

They all look like birds to me, but I've just started studying this stuff. I wouldn't have thought that Native Americans here would have gorillas but I found one yesterday that looks like a whole gorilla.

Most of these are heavily water warn, much of PRA/figure stones contains images of long locally extinct creatures, and conventions and topology are worldwide. I can only see one convincing bird form among these, and with all PRA interpretation is subjective conjecture, not fact.

I'm no statistician, but the odds of natural forces shaping these rocks like birds, with eyes, wings, tail feathers and many of them being flat on the bottom so they are in the correct position to be displayed are highly unlikely.

Well this is something I've been pointing out for a long time. Remember, these finds are not in my hands, I'm just looking from my phone, in  the first one I notice a nice eye shape, and a Beak, on a framed bird head shape, these clearly appear to be calved features. With the others I'm not seeing such details, and the outlines are not exacting birds either.
